OEM vs 3rd Party Phone Screens: What's the Actual Difference?

When your phone screen cracks and you start getting quotes for a repair, you'll almost always hear two terms: OEM and 3rd party (sometimes called aftermarket). Repair shops will often charge very different prices for each — but they won't always explain why.

Here's a plain-English breakdown so you actually know what you're paying for.

What Does OEM Mean?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. In the phone repair world, it means the screen is either made by the original phone manufacturer (Apple, Samsung, etc.) or by the same factory that supplied the manufacturer originally.

An OEM iPhone screen, for example, uses the same display panel, touch layer, and components that Apple fitted when the phone was built. Samsung OEM screens are made by Samsung's own display division — which is actually one of the largest screen manufacturers in the world.

OEM parts are generally the gold standard. They match the original brightness, colour accuracy, and touch sensitivity exactly. They're also more likely to maintain features like True Tone on iPhones or the high refresh rates on Samsung Galaxy devices.

What Are 3rd Party (Aftermarket) Screens?

3rd party screens are made by independent manufacturers — not the original phone maker. The quality here ranges enormously.

At the bottom end, you have very cheap panels that look washed out, have poor touch sensitivity, and may fail within weeks. At the top end, you have premium aftermarket screens — sometimes called "incell" or "OLED aftermarket" — that are close to indistinguishable from OEM in everyday use.

The best aftermarket screens are made using the same underlying display technology. A high-quality aftermarket OLED for an iPhone 13, for example, will have nearly identical colour reproduction and brightness to the original. A budget LCD replacement will look noticeably dimmer and less sharp.

The Real Differences Side by Side

• Colour accuracy: OEM is always the reference. Premium aftermarket is very close. Budget aftermarket can look washed out or too warm.
• Touch sensitivity: OEM and premium aftermarket are indistinguishable. Cheap screens can feel laggy or miss inputs at the edges.
• Special features: True Tone, ProMotion (120Hz), and always-on displays may not work correctly with aftermarket screens on certain iPhone models.
• Brightness: OEM screens handle outdoor visibility best. Premium aftermarket is close. Budget screens can struggle in direct sunlight.
• Longevity: A quality aftermarket screen will last as long as the phone. A cheap one may develop faults within 3–6 months.
• Price: OEM is the most expensive. Premium aftermarket is mid-range. Budget aftermarket is cheapest — but often a false economy.

Does It Affect Your Warranty?

If your phone is still under manufacturer warranty, using a 3rd party screen for a repair will void it. This is worth thinking about for newer, expensive handsets. If your phone is out of warranty — which covers most repairs we see — it makes no practical difference.

Some phone models (particularly newer iPhones) show a notification in Settings when a non-genuine screen is fitted. This is purely informational and doesn't affect how the phone works.

• OLED aftermarket — matches the vibrant Samsung display you're used to. Can be sourced same day.
• Service pack (original Samsung screen) — the genuine Samsung-supplied part, same as what came in the phone. Can be sourced same day for most models.
