- Cable falls out or wiggles → likely the charging port
- Charges fine but drains fast → likely the battery
- Won’t charge at all, no connection icon → try a different cable first, then port
- Gets very hot while charging → battery problem, stop using it

First: rule out the cable and plug
Before assuming anything is wrong with your phone, test with a different cable and a different plug. A surprising number of "charging problems" are just a worn-out cable or a faulty wall adapter. Try:
- A different USB cable (borrow one if you have to)
- A different plug adapter or USB port
- Plugging directly into a laptop USB port
If it starts charging with a different cable, you’ve found your problem and it costs nothing to fix. If it still won’t charge — read on.
Signs it’s the charging port
The charging port takes a lot of punishment — plugged in and out hundreds of times, often at an angle, often in the dark. Over time the internal connectors wear down or collect lint. Signs the port is the issue:
- The cable feels loose or falls out on its own
- You have to hold the cable at a specific angle for it to charge
- The phone charges intermittently — on, then off, then on
- No charging icon appears at all when you plug in
- The port looks dark or visibly clogged inside
If the port looks clogged, take a wooden toothpick and very gently loosen any compacted lint from inside the port. Pocket lint builds up invisibly and can block the connection entirely. This fixes the problem more often than you’d think — and costs nothing. Don’t use metal tools.
If cleaning doesn’t help, the port itself may need replacing. This is a straightforward repair — usually done the same day at Voltrex.
Signs it’s the battery
Batteries degrade over time — it’s chemistry, not a defect. After 2–3 years, most phone batteries hold significantly less charge than when new. Signs the battery is the problem:
- Phone charges fine but the battery drains within a few hours
- Battery percentage jumps around (e.g. drops from 40% to 5% suddenly)
- Phone shuts off when the battery still shows charge remaining
- Phone gets noticeably hot while charging or in use
- The back of the phone feels slightly raised or bulging (stop using it immediately if this happens)
A swollen battery is a safety issue. Stop charging the phone, don’t put it in your pocket, and bring it in as soon as possible. A swollen battery can rupture if punctured or compressed.
How to check battery health on your phone
Both iPhone and Android let you check battery health directly:
Settings → Battery → Battery Health & Charging. Below 80%? Your battery is significantly degraded and replacement is recommended.
Settings → Battery → Battery usage. Or dial *#0228# on Samsung to see detailed battery stats.
Can it be both?
Yes — especially on older phones. A worn battery and a damaged port together are more common than you’d think. When you bring your phone in to Voltrex, we’ll check both and tell you exactly what’s causing the problem before we do anything. No guessing, no unnecessary repairs.
Is it worth replacing the battery or port?
Almost always — yes. For a phone that’s otherwise working fine, a battery or port repair typically adds years of life back to the device for a fraction of the cost of a new phone. The maths is obvious:
- Battery replacement: quick, done while you wait
- Charging port replacement: same day in most cases
- New phone: significantly more, plus the hassle of data transfer and learning a new device
