An iPad screen is a big sheet of glass bonded to the frame with strong adhesive. Replacing it means gently heating the edges, lifting the old glass without damaging the display or the home-button cable underneath, cleaning off every trace of old adhesive, and setting the new screen so it sits flush and stays put. Done properly, it takes longer than a 15-minute phone screen — but the result is a tablet that looks and feels new.
On many standard iPads, the touch glass and the LCD are two separate layers. If your glass is cracked but the picture behind it is perfect, you often only need the glass. iPad Pro and newer iPad Air models use a single laminated display — that's a full-assembly job.
