Cracked Screen But Still Works? Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Wait to Fix It

You dropped it, the screen cracked, but the phone still works fine — so you keep using it. Most people do. It feels harmless when everything still seems to function normally. But a cracked screen is rarely just cosmetic, and waiting almost always costs you more in the end.

Here’s what’s actually happening underneath that crack, and why "it still works" doesn’t mean "it’s fine."

What a Crack Actually Does to Your Screen

1. It breaks the seal protecting the inside of your phone

Modern phone screens are sealed with adhesive to keep dust, moisture and debris out. The moment the glass cracks, that seal is compromised. Dust gets in through the gaps. Moisture from rain, sweat, or a humid bathroom can seep in too — even if your phone normally has water resistance, a cracked screen voids that protection completely.

2. Cracks spread — they don’t stay still

Glass under stress keeps cracking, slowly, every time the phone flexes in your pocket, gets squeezed in a bag, or takes another small knock. What starts as a small corner crack often spreads into a spiderweb across the whole screen within weeks. The longer you wait, the more glass you’re dealing with — and the more likely it becomes unusable rather than just unsightly.

3. Touch sensitivity degrades over time

The touch sensor sits just beneath the glass. Cracks — especially ones that reach the edges or corners — can interfere with touch input. You might notice small dead zones, random taps registering wrong, or the keyboard misbehaving. This usually gets worse, not better, the longer the crack is left.

4. Sharp glass is a real cutting hazard

This one’s simple but people forget it: cracked glass has sharp edges. Cuts to fingers (and faces, if you hold the phone to your ear) are extremely common with cracked screens, especially once the crack starts lifting slightly from the frame.

When It Becomes Urgent

Some signs mean you need to stop waiting and get it sorted immediately:

• Spiderwebbing — the crack has spread into multiple branching lines across the screen
• Black spots or discolouration — this usually means the LCD or OLED panel itself is damaged underneath, not just the glass
• Lines running across the display — a sign the display panel is failing, which can lead to a fully dead screen
• Glass lifting or flaking off — at this point it’s a genuine injury risk
• Touch dead zones — parts of the screen no longer responding to taps

If you’re seeing any of these, it’s no longer a "get round to it eventually" repair — the damage is actively progressing.

Why Waiting Costs You More

A simple cracked glass repair is usually the cheapest screen fix there is. But waiting can turn it into a more expensive job:

• If moisture gets in through the crack and reaches internal components, you’re now looking at a water damage repair on top of a screen replacement
• If the crack spreads to the point the display panel itself fails, you’ll need a full screen assembly rather than just the glass
• If you cut yourself on the glass and drop the phone reacting to it, you risk additional damage from the second drop
• A heavily cracked phone is much harder to sell or trade in — resale value drops fast once the screen is visibly damaged
