Phone Not Charging? It’s Probably Not the Cable

You plug your phone in and nothing happens. First instinct: blame the cable. So you try another one. Still nothing. Maybe the plug? You swap that too. Still nothing. By now you’re convinced the phone is broken — but in most cases, the fix is simpler than you think, and you might not even need a repair.

Here’s how to actually diagnose why your phone isn’t charging, in the right order.

Step 1: Rule Out the Cable and Charger

Yes, try a different cable — but make sure it’s a decent one. Cheap third-party cables are often the actual problem: they look fine but have poor internal wiring that makes charging unreliable. Try a known-good cable from a different device, ideally an official or branded one, before moving on.

Also test a different plug or try plugging directly into a laptop USB port. If nothing works across multiple cables and power sources, the problem is almost certainly the phone itself, not the charger.

Step 2: Get the Port Professionally Cleaned

This is the most overlooked cause — and it solves the problem more often than anything else. Charging ports collect lint, dust and debris from pockets and bags over time. Eventually there’s enough buildup that the cable can’t make proper contact with the charging pins, and the phone stops charging entirely.

It’s tempting to try poking around in the port yourself, but the charging pins inside are very delicate — it’s easy to bend or break them if you’re not familiar with what you’re doing, which turns a free fix into a port replacement job. Bring it in and we’ll clean it out properly with the right tools. We also clean out the speakers at the same time, which most people don’t realise have usually collected just as much debris.

Step 3: Restart the Phone

It sounds too simple, but a full power-off restart can resolve charging issues caused by software glitches that prevent the phone from recognising a connected charger. If the phone still has enough battery to turn on, restart it and try charging again.

When It’s the Charging Port Itself

If you’ve cleaned the port and tried multiple cables and the phone still won’t charge — or if the cable only works at a specific angle, feels wobbly, or falls out on its own — the port itself is likely damaged or worn. The internal connector pins can bend or break over time, especially if the phone has been dropped or cables have been pulled out at an angle repeatedly.

A charging port replacement is one of the most common repairs we do, and it’s usually quick and affordable. Don’t put it off — using a damaged port can cause further damage to the board underneath.

When It’s the Battery

If the port looks clean and undamaged, but the phone dies very quickly after charging, only charges to a certain percentage, or shuts off at 20–30% charge, the battery is probably the issue rather than the port. A battery that’s genuinely failing will often refuse to charge past a certain point or drain instantly under any load.

You can check battery health in Settings on iPhone (Settings ’ Battery ’ Battery Health) — anything below 80% means you’re losing meaningful capacity. Android varies by manufacturer, but most have a battery health check in the settings menu.
